Minerals such as calcium and magnesium are removed from water through a process called ion exchange. These minerals cause hard water, which can lead to scale buildup and reduced soap lather. This process uses resin beads to attract and trap these minerals, replacing them with sodium or potassium ions. When the resin beads are full, the softener regenerates, flushing out the minerals and replenishing the resin with sodium or potassium.
